Our Association began in an informal way as early as 1883. There is a composite picture of the old timers taken in 1895 - OLD TIMERS ASSOCIATION - 1895. It has 64 pictures on it, which means that in reality we have been in existence for over 130 years. The Northern Alberta Pioneers & Descendants Association is one of the oldest organizations still active in this city. It was formally organized on June 22, l894, by a group of 36 pioneers men who had trekked across the prairies from Winnipeg or worked their way up the Saskatchewan River by boat. Incorporation took place in Regina which was the Capital of the North West Territories.
Some of these men, including Frank Oliver, James Gibbons, Donald Ross, Richard Hardisty, James Goodridge, John A. McDougall, James McDonald, John Walter, Matt McCauley, Charles Sanderson, and John Kelly, have their names perpetuated by having schools, neighbourhoods, bridges and streets named for them.
In 1924 there was a reorganization of the Edmonton Old Timer's Association, as it was then known. It would be no longer be largely a social organization. At the General Meeting of January 30, changes were made to the Constitution and Bylaws. The changes included and were adopted read as: "This Association shall be composed of men and women who reside in that part of the Province of Alberta north of Township 40 and who, on or before the 31st day of December, 1890, settled in the Province of Manitoba or the North West Territories, and their descendants upon reaching the age of 21."
In November, 1925, the date was changed to "prior to the 31st day of December, 1895". In January, 1940, the date was changed to December 31, 1898. In 1957 the date was changed to December 31st, 1899 and finally at a special meeting in April, 1965, the date was changed to December 31, 1905, where it has remained.
We are no longer a social organization only. Today we play an important role in Edmonton and area through a large number of programs. Our Vision and Mission Statements as well as our Goals are on our Home Page. In addition, the Old Timer's Cabin is available for rent to the community for meetings, weddings, anniversaries etc. Sandy's Food Service is our resident Booking Agent and Caterer.

Building Fund (Log Fund)
Donations to the Fund are always welcome and most appreciated. The Log Fund was set up to maintain, repair, and when necessary, replace the cabin logs. The logs were donated to the association when the cabin was built in 1958. These logs are beautiful but they do need maintenance. |
